Mike Vick and Dog Fighting

Hello again!! After the sports management class on 9/21 I began thinking about Mike Vick and him going to jail for dog fighting. I was surprised to find out that dog fighting was considered a sport to most people and was accepted in society in the 19th century. Even though this was true I believe he deserved to go to jail for what he did considering it happened in this century. His actions would be viewed as normal to most people. Some places in the 19th century looked down upon but it was not illegal. In this era it is illegal and has serious consequences for example mike Vick spent a good deal amount of time in jail. He ruined his career for fighting, betting and killing dogs that did not perform well. This disgusts me that people can do this to dogs to bet on them. Even though I do not agree with dog fighting the people counted on dog fighting for entertainment along with cockfighting back then. I think that it is wrong and defiantly should be illegal. But in the 19th century dogs weren’t part of a family as they are now. Dogs were not viewed really as mans best friend. I think that makes a huge difference why people feel so strongly about these fights and try to put a stop to it. Hopefully Vick learned his lesson and will not go back to dog fighting because it is cruel and a disgusting sport.

  1. I think you bring up a great point about dogs now being considered "man's best friend." Besides that, there is a lot of advocacy for animals from groups such as the Humane Society. I wonder when the attitudes in our society started to change. Obviously, there is still a lot of backlash toward Mike Vick, even though he has paid his debt, so to speak.

  2. I defentily agree with you Shaun that dog fighting should be illegal and also have a stricter punishment for commiting this crime. The culture back in the 19th century was different from what is now.In the 19th century there was no mainstream media in America to cover reports of visicious dogfighting from different parts of the country. We are in a society that people should treat animals as the same way as humans. The animals are protected by the humane society association.I have been watching and hearing alot of cases on the news reporting that shows negatively of people abusing and also not sheltering their animals such as cats or dogs. It involves terrible acts such as a owner of a cat geeting rid of their tail and also not giving the cat shelter. The terrible care of these owners to these animals should deserve some prison time. The owners will be sanctioned from the humane society association to never have a animal in their household again. I think the punishment that Michal Vick got with having two years in prison was predictible. The reason is that Michal Vick was one of the richest althete in the NFL and also recieve special treatment from the United States justice system.

  3. I definitely agree with you Shaun that dog fighting should be illegal and also provide a stricter punishment for committing this crime. The culture back in the 19th century was different from what is now. In the early 19th century, America had dog fighting legal to practiced. There was no punishment that was carried out from the justice system if any has reports of viscous dog fighting from different parts of the country. We are in a society that people should treat animals the same way as humans. The animals are protected by the humane society association. I have been watching and hearing a lot of cases on the local news reporting a hated crime which shows people abusing and also not sheltering their animals such as cats or dogs. It involves terrible acts such as an owner of a cat getting rid of their tail and also not giving the cat shelter. The terrible care of these owners to these animals should deserve some prison time. I think the punishment that Michel Vick got with having two years in prison was predictable. The reason is that Michel Vick was one of the richest athletes in the NFL and also received special treatment from the United States justice system. The special treatment is also received from the NFL because the commissioner of the league reinstates Michel Vick back into the league. Michel Vick just got done serving his 18 months prison sentence which portrays a negative image toward the NFL from having complaints from the humane society for animals.
