It has come down to my final blog post for sm 2210!!! It has been a great ride so far. I have learned a lot in this class about the history of sport along with current issues discussed in blogs and ethical issue presentations. This class was able to help me learn about the pastimes of sports that I did not know about.
Before this class I really didn’t know anything about the history of most sports. I am not a baseball fan so I never really cared about the history. I was able to learn who the main people were and how baseball came to how big it is today. This class has giving me more of an understanding why people love baseball so much. Learning about all the other sports such as boxing, soccer, tennis, golf, football, billiards, cricket, cock fighting ect. has really showed me how each sport became to what it is today. I was not expecting to learn about some of the sports we did.
I think the blogs helped out a lot in this class. I think the fact that we were able to do blogs instead of a final paper. It helped me keep up on current topics and the view points that others thought about them. This helped me gain a different point of view on the topic other than my own. There were topics I have never heard of before talked about such as Caster Semenya. I had no clue about her at all. The blogs were a great way to interact on each of the topics. It also was a good way to learn about my fellow classmates and there view points on topics.
The one sport I wish we learned more about is hockey. I love hockey and I was hoping there would be more covered on it. Also I wish we cover lacrosse a little more because there was only one little part on it. It seemed like there was so much more done on baseball, tennis, and football compared to other sports. I know those are the most popular sports but I thought some of the other sports should have been covered more.
I liked how there were so many video clips on the topics it helped me learn and understand the topics more. I don’t think the class would have been as effective without them. The ethical issue presentations were very interesting and got minds think about various topics. I was able to learn a lot about various sports, players and topics in doing this.
At the beginning of the class we were asked what sporting event we would attend if we had the chance to and I choose Miracle on Ice. I still would have to say that because it was such an amazing thing for the group of you guys to accomplish. I would think it would be such an incredible feeling to be at that game vs. the soviets. We were able to learn why this was so amazing during class and it only made me want to be able to go to it more.
Overall I liked this class more than I thought I would. I am happy I choose to take this class since it was an elective. I will defiantly be recommending it to others.

Skiing vs. Snowboarding
Many people disagree to when it comes to what is better skiing or snowboarding. I personally like to ski more than snowboard. I have been skiing since I was 5 in Colorado. My dad used to take us skiing out there a couple times a year so I began to get really good. I switched to snowboarding for a 2 years in 6th and 7th grade. I would go on school ski trips to Wisconsin and I would snowboard there because it was nothing compared to the Rockies.
Mountains used to be only skiing and when snowboarding came around it didn’t become that popular until recently. Many kids think snowboarding is cooler so they learn to do that instead of skiing. I personally think people should learn how to ski first and then learn to snowboard. It is fun to be able to do both and I think it is better to learn how to ski before boarding.
Most people who know how to ski and try to switch to snowboarding say it is so much harder than skiing and vice versa. Snowboarding defiantly takes a toll on the rear end of a person while learning. If a person knows how to wakeboard or skateboard they are probably be able to pick up snowboarding better than skiing. Because I was a hockey player and I rollerbladed skiing came more natural to me.
Skiing:
Skiing came first
Skiing is faster
When you ski you face straight downhill
Better on flats because you have poles to push along
Better on bumps and ice
Don’t have to undo straps on feet for chairlift
Lots to carry
Snowboarding:
Body facing the side
Started new clothing trends
Easier on the knees
Less to carry
Better in powder
Constant sitting and strapping in
Hard on wrists
More comfortable boots
Snowboarding has definitely become more popular in the past 6 years. But a lot of people are going back to skiing. Skiing has taken all of the style tips from snowboarding. Also many types of skis now are curved on both ended so they can go backwards. This has helped allow skiers to do some of the same tricks as snowboarders and has increased the presence of skiers in snowboard parks.
It is all personal opinion on which is better. Skiers say skiing is better and snowboarders say snowboarding is it is an on going battle.

Should College Athletes Get Paid?
Many people think that college athletes should get but I would have to disagree with them. College athletes are at a school to get an education and play sports. A college is also attended by non athletes.
People think that we should be paying college athletes because they are risking career ending injuries to play. They think the get paid because if an amazing athlete gets hurt they could ruins their career in the professional league. This would cause them to lose a lot of money in the long run.
In a sense college athletes are getting paid though scholarships, living, books ect. Many of these athletes get to go to school free or on major scholarships. They are being paid with an education to some of the finest universities in the country. These athletes get to play the sport they love and get an education in the same place. They also tend to get discounts on books, living, meal plans. All of this adds up to thousands of dollars. They also get there traveling paid for when they play other teams
I think it is stupid to even think about paying college athletes. It would be so hard to determine who should get paid what. Should a football player be paid more than soccer? What about cheerleaders and dance teams ect. Also, schools do not have the kind of money to pay student athletes. Not every athlete is going to make it to the pros because they don’t have enough skill so why pay an average to bad player.
They are in college to have fun, get an education, and play sports.

Tiger Woods Left With Only Golf
Tiger Woods has recently be accused of cheating on his wife. After this allegation came out there were several other women that came forward and said they also had relations with Tiger.
This is a hard blow for tiger because he could lose his sponsors and his family. This is also going to impact on how people view him. He is defiantly going to lose many supporters. Since he refuses to address the public people are going to believe everything they hear about him. But in doing this there is not a confession to guilt and could be saving him from losing his sponsors.
Tiger should have never done what he did because he is 33 and has two kids and a beautiful wife which he most likely lose do to his actions. Being famous comes with temptations and tiger caved into them and has ruined his image.
Recently there was truck out side of his house that took away five big boxes of stuff. He has not been seen at all at the house since the incident. Who knows what is going to happen with his family, but most likely they will be out of his life.
This whole topic just needs to be over and done with. This has dragged on way to long; he is only human and made a mistake.
At least he is still good at golf the one thing he has left!!!

NASCAR and the Confederate flag
The ethical issue this week form Marlena and Oliver was whether the confederate flag should be banned form NASCAR events. This is an issue because some people think that it is racist and sexist. I agree to a certain extent that it is true. I do no think that it really means that it just represents the pastime.
The confederate flag has be at NASCAR for as long as I can remember it basically is a part of the sport. I am not saying that is a reason to keep it because things change over time due to the changing society. Just because something is legal doesn’t mean it is right.
This is an issue because NASCAR could be losing views due to all of the confederate flags flying during the races. Yes could be view as racist to some people but that is not what it stands for, Personally I don’t think that the flag should be banned from the races.
Banning the confederate flag would only lead to further restrictions in other stuff. I think it also will impact how many people attend the events. I think banning the flag would upset more people than making people happy.
Overall I don’t think NASCAR should band the flag because people have the right to freedom of speech and it has been a tradition for NASCAR so long. If they did ban the flag how much of an impact of the sport? Would more or less people go to the races? Would it lead to more things banned?

Brendan Shanahan!
On Tuesday Brendan Shanahan announced that he is officially retiring for the NHL. Brendan was not playing this season because there was not a spot for him on the New Jersey devils first three lines. He realized that it was his time to stop playing and focus on other things in life. Brendan Shananhan played 21 seasons in the NHL. This is amazing that he was able to be an amazing player that that long of time. Playing any kind of sport takes a toll on the body and he was able to compete at such a high intensity for all those years are amazing.
I remember he was one of my favorite players when I was little. I was a Detroit Red Wings fan when I was little. When he played for them he was able to win three Stanley Cups. This is remarkable because many players do not even get the chance to play in one Stanly Cup game in there lives. Many players were surprised that he retired. Valiquette did not think that Brendan was going to retire. He thought there were plenty of teams looking at him to play for them. Former Rangers coach Tom Renney said "The game is better for having had Brendan in it and will continue to [be] as long as he stays involved." A lot of people are hoping that he stays with the NHL to improve it.
During his professional career he was able to get 1,354 points. I had know clue that he had this many points. He had 2,489 penalty minutes and this was all done in the 1,524 games that he played. He was truly a great player and the amount of points he has for the number of games he has played proves it.

parental violence in youth sport
On Monday Oct 16 the ethical issue presentation was about parental violence in youth sport. This was a very interesting topic because I have seen some of the video before about this. It is crazy that parents actually act like this during the children’s games. I know parents like to scream and yell during games but to actually take it to the next step is a whole different level.
I actually have had some of my teammate’s parents for hockey try to fight other parents for yelling inappropriate things to our team. Luckily there were other parents to break up the arguments before it got physical.
I think that parents have the right to yell and cheer during the games, but they have to remember that they are not the ones playing the game. If they can’t handle being grownups while watching there kids play they should not even come to the game or don’t even put their kids in sport in the first place. I always found it embarrassing to hear my mom or dad yell at parents on the other team. Parents have to remember that there our coaches and refs to take care of all the nonsense on the field, court, or ice.
Majority of the violence among parents are when the kids are really little and are just learning the game. There is no need for parents to get in a physical altercation over kids trying to have fun and learn how to play the game. Also, as the kids get older they are able to take care of there issues in the game themselves and don’t need their parents fight with a kids parents because he hit you wrong or late.
